Low Libido

The Facts

Having a low libido means having little or no sex drive. It is very common in women, but not quite as common in men. Even men who are experiencing erection problems usually have a normal, healthy sex drive.

Some men find that their interest in sex diminishes as they get older, and there are very few men who never experience any sexual desire in their lives.

How common is lack of libido in men?

Erectile dysfunction is far more common in men than having a lack of libido. The two are completely different and should not be confused.

Many men who have a lack of libido can almost always achieve an erection, but they have lost all desire to actually have sex.

What are the causes of lack of libido in men?

A lack of desire in men can be of either physical or psychological origin, as is the same with women.

Physical causes

  • Alcohol Abuse – quite common.
  • Abuse of drugs such as cocaine and more recently all legal 'highs'
  • Obesity – quite common; slimming down will often help.
  • Anaemia - unusual, unless the man has been bleeding for any reason.
  • Hyperprolactinaemia – a rare disorder where the pituitary gland produces too much of the hormone prolactin.
  • Prescribed drugs – particularly Proscar (finasteride), a tablet used for prostate problems.
  • Low testosterone level - contrary to what many people think, this is rare, except in cases where some injury or illness has affected the testicles.
  • Any major disease such as diabetes.
  • Almost all Auto-Immune diseases will affect your libido at some point, all forms of arthritis and the medications that go hand in hand with any A.I.D may cause issues in both men & women. You just need to remember, YOU ARE NOT ON YOUR OWN!

Psychological causes

  • Depression – very common.
  • Stress and overwork.
  • Hang-ups from childhood.
  • Latent homosexuality.
  • Serious relationship problems with your partner.
